The Delhi Police have made a significant breakthrough in their efforts to combat cybercrime by dismantling a sophisticated sextortion ring that exploited unsuspecting victims through deceitful video calls and coerced them into paying substantial sums of money.

Modus Operandi of the Sextortion Gang

The ringleader, identified as Arman, a 23-year-old individual from Rajasthan, was apprehended following a meticulous investigation that hinged on a single complaint filed on the National Cyber Crime Reporting Portal. The perpetrator would then manipulate the victim into exposing themselves, recording the intimate moments, and subsequently threatening to disseminate the compromising footage across social media unless a ransom was paid.”

Victim Extortion Leads to Breakthrough

One such incident prompted a victim to lodge a formal complaint on the national cybercrime portal, detailing the harrowing experience. This report triggered a chain reaction that ultimately led to the exposure of the sextortion ring. Authorities analyzed the monetary transactions associated with the crime and tracked them back to the Mewat region in Rajasthan, where subsequent searches yielded crucial evidence.

Arrest and Interrogation Provide Insights

During the raids, law enforcement officials seized multiple mobile phones and 11 SIM cards from Arman’s possession. Forensic analysis revealed nearly 150 explicit videos, comprising approximately 50 distinct cases involving various victims. Furthermore, investigators discovered that one device was specifically designed for initiating video calls and communicating with victims, whereas another device was utilized for playing pre-recorded explicit content during these interactions.

According to the police, “Upon further questioning, Arman reportedly confessed to employing fake identities and randomly targeting individuals through social media and dating app profiles. He also acknowledged using specific software to create and distribute explicit content without the knowledge or consent of the featured individuals.”
