Fake CBI Calls with Obscene Videos Scams Target Multiple Indian States
Fake CBI Gang Busted for Extortion Scheme Targeting Women and Students
A recent cybercrime operation, posing as the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) and local crime branches, has been disrupted by law enforcement authorities in India. The gang, consisting of eight individuals, was responsible for over 20 confirmed cases of extortion, resulting in estimated losses of thousands of rupees.
The gang’s script, which was designed to manipulate victims systematically, typically began with a phone call from a person claiming to be a senior official from the CBI or crime branch. The caller would inform the victim that they had been identified as having viewed “obscene” content on their device and that a team was being dispatched to apprehend them. If the victim expressed skepticism or requested proof, the caller would abruptly end the call, leaving the victim feeling vulnerable and anxious.
Gang Leaders and Operations
Police investigations revealed that the gang’s leaders, Gorelal and Ramji, were the masterminds behind the operation, which was run like a coordinated call-center-style setup. The gang members were primarily located in Uttar Pradesh, Bihar, Madhya Pradesh, and Rajasthan, and targeted women and students, who accounted for approximately 70% of the victims.
Arrests and Investigations
During the raids, police recovered multiple mobile phones, bank passbooks, cheque books, and debit cards from the accused, providing evidence of the gang’s extensive operations. Although some of the gang members had limited formal education, they successfully posed as high-ranking officials to intimidate and deceive their victims.
As a result of the investigation, eight individuals have been arrested and are currently facing charges. Further action is being taken to identify additional members of the gang and quantify the total amount of money lost due to the extortion scheme.
