Fastly Empowers Enterprises with Real-Time AI Control and Agent Management
Fastly has unveiled a suite of new features aimed at providing organizations with real-time oversight and governance of their artificial intelligence infrastructure.
Fastly’s Data Indicates a Significant Shift in Network Activity
Fastly’s data indicates a significant shift in network activity, with machine-generated traffic surpassing 50% of total traffic in July and August of this year. Additionally, AI-related traffic has expanded 6.5 times faster than human-generated traffic between January and May, according to internal metrics.
Financial Constraints and AI Budgets
Concurrently, financial constraints are becoming more pronounced, as 93% of organizations report exceeding their AI budgets, per a McKinsey analysis.
Fastly’s Programmable Edge Network for AI Challenges
The Fastly platform now extends its programmable edge network to address AI-specific challenges, allowing enterprises to enforce consistent access, security, and routing policies across multiple model providers and infrastructure setups.
“Enterprises must maintain operational speed and resilience while integrating AI tools and coding agents,” stated Kelly Shortridge, Fastly’s Chief Product Officer. “By applying the same real-time control mechanisms trusted for content delivery and software security to AI models, applications, and agents, organizations can achieve scalable innovation without sacrificing stability.”
Three Core Areas of AI Governance
The platform addresses three core areas of AI governance: managing interactions between applications and AI models, overseeing user and system engagement with AI-powered tools, and regulating agent access to enterprise APIs.
New Features for AI Management
The proliferation of coding agents and AI-assisted development has introduced new endpoints that often outpace documentation and review processes. The newly launched capabilities target these challenges by offering:
AI Runtime Control
AI Runtime Control – This feature centralizes model call routing through a single interface, supporting both public and self-hosted providers. Virtual keys safeguard credentials for underlying model providers, while real-time analytics track token usage, enforce rate limits, and manage budget thresholds. Organizations retain flexibility in model selection while maintaining centralized policy enforcement.
AI Firewall
AI Firewall – Designed to counter large language model (LLM)-based threats, this tool detects and blocks malicious activities such as prompt injection attacks. By analyzing incoming requests at the edge, it prevents harmful content from reaching targeted models before execution.
API Security
API Security – This component ensures adherence to API contracts by applying uniform rules to traffic generated by agents, human users, and conventional systems. It allows organizations to monitor or block non-compliant requests on a per-service basis.
Integration with Existing Tools
The Fastly for AI platform integrates existing tools like Bot Management, ContentGuard, DDoS Protection, API Discovery, and Next-Gen WAF with these new innovations. The updated framework enables enterprises to manage external AI traffic, oversee internal AI operations, and defend against autonomous agents acting on their behalf.
