Hyderabad Cyber Fraud: Residents Lose ₹17.34 Crore, 464 Cases Reported
Hyderabad Police documented 464 instances of cybercrime in September 2026, with residents reporting financial losses totaling ₹17.34 crore. The figures reflect a significant rise in online fraud activities within the jurisdiction of the Hyderabad Police Commissionerate.
Investigations and Recoveries
Additional Commissioner of Police (Crimes and SIT) M Srinivasulu confirmed that 83 cases were resolved during the month, though the majority remained under investigation. Authorities also noted that ₹88.48 lakh was recovered and distributed to victims, offering partial restitution for losses incurred through deceptive schemes.
Social Media Actions
The Cyber Crime unit identified 140 Facebook profiles and 30 Instagram accounts linked to 30 paid advertisements promoting fraudulent content. These included misleading offers related to rare coins, ₹5 currency notes featuring tractor imagery, and banknotes with serial number 786. Additional advertisements targeted users with betting predictions and guarantees of financial returns.
Law enforcement agencies collaborated with social media platforms to remove these posts, citing violations of community guidelines. As part of ongoing cyber patrol operations, the Hyderabad Cyber Crime unit removed 1,457 social media profiles and 2,603 advertisements. The content included promotions for online gaming platforms, illegal betting services, and investment schemes designed to exploit users in India.
Challenges and Responses
These actions underscore efforts to mitigate risks associated with digital fraud. Data from September highlights persistent financial vulnerabilities despite law enforcement interventions. The arrest of suspects across nine states indicates the cross-regional nature of cybercrime investigations.
The prevalence of fraudulent investment promotions, misleading currency-related offers, and betting advertisements reveals evolving tactics employed by malicious actors. Police continue to prioritize digital monitoring, content takedowns, and victim recovery initiatives to counter these threats.
