Cybercrime Threats in Madhya Pradesh

Between 2021 and 2025, Madhya Pradesh faced significant financial losses due to cybercrime, totaling over ₹1,054 crores. The recovery rate was alarmingly low, with only approximately ₹1.94 crores recovered, representing 0.18% of the total amount swindled.

Increasing Frequency of Cyber Fraud Cases

Between May 1, 2021, and July 13, 2025, the number of cyber fraud cases in the state consistently increased, averaging nearly ₹263 crores per annum. This indicates that cybercrime has evolved from isolated incidents to a sophisticated network of fraudulent activities.

Tactics Used by Scammers

Citizens are being targeted through various tactics, including fake calls, phishing links, and emerging methods like ‘digital arrest,’ where scammers impersonate authorities to coerce victims into making immediate payments.

“Addressing cybercrime requires a multifaceted approach, combining better technology, trained personnel, stronger enforcement, and public awareness,” says former IPS officer and renowned cybercrime expert Prof. Triveni Singh.

Need for Improved Cyber Security Infrastructure

The state’s lack of a full-fledged cyber forensic division and inadequate infrastructure compared to neighboring states, such as Uttar Pradesh and Maharashtra, exacerbates the problem. The leader of opposition, Umang Singhar, has called attention to these issues, urging the government to strengthen the state’s cyber security infrastructure and increase efforts to combat cybercrime.
