James Aaron Bishop Appointed as New Pentagon Chief Information Security Officer
Department of Defense Appoints New Deputy Chief Information Officer for Cybersecurity
The Department of Defense has appointed James Aaron Bishop as its new Deputy Chief Information Officer for Cybersecurity and Chief Information Security Officer (DCIO-CS-CISO).
Bishop’s Background and Experience
Bishop, a veteran of the US Navy, assumed the role in an acting capacity on February 27. As DCIO-CS-CISO, he will provide expert policy, technical, program, and department-wide oversight support to the Department of Defense’s Chief Information Officer on all cybersecurity matters.
Bishop’s appointment follows a distinguished career in both the public and private sectors. He previously served as the Chief Information Security Officer for the Department of the Air Force and held executive roles at Microsoft and SAIC.
Succession and Related Appointments
Bishop succeeds David McKeown, who is retiring from the federal government after a career spanning over four decades. McKeown will take on a role in the private sector.
The appointment of Bishop as DCIO-CS-CISO comes shortly after Nick Andersen was appointed as the acting director of the Cybersecurity and Infrastructure Security Agency (CISA).
Andersen, who has served as the Executive Assistant Director for Cybersecurity at CISA, replaced Madhu Gottumukkala, who has been named Director of Strategic Implementation at the Department of Homeland Security.
Importance of Bishop’s Appointment
Bishop’s experience and expertise will be crucial in addressing the evolving cybersecurity landscape. His appointment is part of the Department of Defense’s efforts to strengthen its cybersecurity posture and protect its systems and networks from increasingly sophisticated threats.
