Kanpur Investor Lured by ₹5,000 Profit Scam Suffers ₹40.32 Lakh Loss
A resident of Govind Nagar fell victim to a cyber fraud scheme involving a deceptive gold trading platform, resulting in a loss of ₹40.32 lakh.
The Scam Unveiled
The scam unfolded after the victim was enticed by an initial return of ₹5,000 on a ₹50,000 investment, which led to further financial commitments. The fraudulent operation began through the Morgan Max company website in January 2026. Following the initial deposit, the account showed a profit of ₹5,000 within 24 hours, reinforcing the victim’s trust in the platform. This prompted additional transfers of ₹4 lakh in four installments. The platform later altered its domain name and corporate identity, yet the victim continued engaging with the service. The account dashboard displayed a balance of $68,085.75, creating the illusion of substantial gains. When the victim requested a withdrawal, the operators cited mandatory fees and processing charges as barriers to accessing funds. Instead of facilitating the transaction, they directed the victim to make multiple bank transfers under various justifications. Over time, the victim remitted ₹40.32 lakh across multiple accounts. Despite these payments, no funds were released. The situation escalated when the operators demanded an additional $2,193 to process the withdrawal, prompting the victim to recognize the deception.
The Investigation and Response
A formal complaint was filed with local authorities, initiating a collaborative investigation between the police and cybercrime unit. The probe focuses on tracing the flow of transferred funds, identifying individuals managing the recipient accounts, and uncovering the coordination behind the platform’s rebranding. Investigators are also analyzing digital records from the trading portal to reconstruct the sequence of fraudulent activities.
Lessons Learned from the Case
The case highlights the tactics employed by cybercriminals to exploit trust through initial small returns, followed by escalating demands for payments under false pretenses.
