Kerala Police uncovered a suspected examination fraud network involving mobile devices and a covert communication channel during the Kerala Government Certificate in Engineering (KGCE) examination, resulting in the cancellation of the test and the arrest of one individual.

Investigation and Arrests

The incident occurred during the exam held on July 1, 2026, at the Government Polytechnic College in Mattannur. Investigations revealed that irregularities during the examination prompted authorities to initiate a probe. Koothuparamba Police detained S. Janardana, a 36-year-old resident of Kurudapadavi in Kasaragod district, who works as a temporary employee at the Kerala State Electricity Board (KSEB) Vorkady Section Office.

Arrest of S. Janardana

According to officials, Janardana allegedly received exam answers via a mobile phone while inside the examination hall. A private coaching instructor, Suresh Babu from Vadakara, is suspected of supplying correct answers during the test. He has been absent since the investigation began, with law enforcement actively searching for him.

Police indicated that the accused may have been part of a broader organized scheme, with multiple candidates linked to Babu’s coaching classes potentially involved. During the probe, investigators discovered a secret group established by Babu for his students, through which exam answers were allegedly shared. The group reportedly included 23 members.

Digital Evidence and Cybersecurity Concerns

Authorities are now assessing whether other participants in the group also took the examination and benefited from the alleged scheme. Digital evidence, including seized mobile devices, chat logs, call records, and other electronic data, is being analyzed to reconstruct the network’s operations and identify all participants. Investigators are also examining potential collusion with individuals involved in the examination process.

Cybersecurity Expert’s Comments

A cybersecurity expert highlighted the growing challenge of leveraging mobile phones, encrypted messaging platforms, and social media groups for academic misconduct. They underscored the necessity of enhanced electronic monitoring, mobile signal jamming, digital forensic analysis, and social media intelligence to prevent such incidents.

Ongoing Investigation and Future Steps

The examination authority subsequently decided to cancel the KGCE test, emphasizing the need to uphold the integrity of academic assessments. Officials stated that stringent measures will be enforced against those implicated in organized examination fraud. The case remains under active investigation, with further arrests and revelations anticipated once the absconding suspect is located and the digital evidence is fully evaluated.
