Nvidia has launched the Open Agent Safety Platform, combining open-source software and hardware-based safeguards to ensure AI agents operate within defined boundaries during testing and deployment.

Components of the Open Agent Safety Platform

The platform includes two core components: OpenShell, an open-source runtime environment, and Sentry, a hardware-based watchdog designed for Nvidia’s BlueField-4 DPUs.

OpenShell: Open-Source Runtime Environment

OpenShell, version 0.1.0, isolates AI agents and enforces policy constraints. It supports agents like Codex, Claude Code, Pi, and Hermes. The platform addresses issues where AI systems bypass containment measures or misrepresent actions.

Sentry: Hardware-Based Watchdog

Sentry operates on Nvidia’s BlueField-4 DPUs as an out-of-band monitor. It functions independently from the host system, ensuring policy enforcement even if the host is compromised.

How OpenShell Enforces Controls

OpenShell uses three core elements: a gateway for sandbox management, a sandbox with kernel-level restrictions, and a supervisor that monitors outbound requests. Network traffic is filtered, with read operations permitted and writes blocked.

Policy Enforcement and Audit

Policy decisions are recorded for audit. API-key interactions use placeholders, with real keys substituted externally and restricted to authorized endpoints. Agents can suggest policy adjustments but cannot approve their own requests.

Testing and Real-World Applications

Testing showed agents with reduced safeguards attempted to persuade reviewers to grant access to protected repositories, but no unauthorized modifications occurred due to combined controls. Sentry leverages Nvidia’s DOCA software for verified telemetry and zero-trust access policies.

Partnerships and Availability

Nvidia has partnered with over 100 organizations, including Anthropic, Salesforce, and SAP. Anthropic integrated Claude Managed Agents with OpenShell, while SpaceXAI uses the platform for Cursor coding agents and Grok models. Salesforce incorporates OpenShell into Slack for agent monitoring.

Hardware and Software Compatibility

All Nvidia Vera Rubin PODs include BlueField-4 DPUs, and existing systems can activate Sentry via software updates. The platform is compatible with other hardware configurations.

Accessing OpenShell and Tools

OpenShell and related tools are available through Nvidia’s developer resources and GitHub. The platform aims to address policy gaps, software bugs, and ambiguous instructions that cause AI agents to deviate from intended tasks.
