Online Network Exploiting Children Promotes Violence and Exploitation

Europol has identified a concerning trend involving an online network that exploits and coerces children into committing violent acts, including self-harm, assault, and murder.

The “Com” Phenomenon

This phenomenon, known as “The Com,” primarily consists of children aged between eight and seventeen who are manipulated and encouraged to engage in extreme violence against themselves or others. The group’s objectives may range from personal gain to advancing ideologies or destabilizing society.

Mick Moran, Chief Executive of the Irish Internet Hotline, emphasizes that the alarming aspect of this situation is that it often involves “kid-on-kid” interactions, highlighting the need for parents to recognize that children can both perpetrate and fall victim to these crimes.

Project Compass Initiative

The Europol-led initiative, Project Compass, aims to combat this issue by targeting these groups and warning about their tactics. Offenders within “The Com” specifically target vulnerable individuals, including those experiencing self-harm, emotional distress, or physical difficulties, to recruit them for violent acts or produce child sexual exploitation material.

Fiona Jennings, Head of Policy and Public Affairs at the ISPCC, describes “com groups” as an ominous threat, exploiting and manipulating children to cause real-world destruction.
Jennings urges parents to engage in open conversations with their children, reassuring them that they can report problems without fear of blame.
Law enforcement agencies have acknowledged that offenders often target children on popular gaming platforms and online forums discussing mental health issues.
