Police Advisory: Avoid Fake Websites & UPI PIN Scams in Indiramma Housing Fraud
Hyderabad Police have issued warnings regarding deceptive links, harmful APK files, and UPI PIN scams targeting individuals submitting the ₹10,000 Earnest Money Deposit (EMD) under the Indiramma Housing Scheme.
Police Advisory on Indiramma Housing Fraud
As thousands of Telangana households initiate payments for affordable housing units, law enforcement agencies have escalated alerts to prevent exploitation tied to the initiative. The advisory coincides with the launch of the state’s largest urban housing project in recent years, which has drawn attention from cybercriminals seeking to capitalize on its structure.
Key Details of the Indiramma Housing Scheme
The Indiramma Housing Scheme, launched for Hyderabad’s Core Urban Region on July 20, aims to construct 100,000 affordable flats in phases. The initial phase includes 7,680 units for low-income groups, with applications open from July 21 to August 10. This timeframe, combined with a mandatory financial transaction, creates an environment where fraudsters can exploit urgency and uncertainty.
Fraud Tactics and Cyber Threats
Police emphasized that the selection process is fully transparent, with no intermediaries involved. Refunds for unsuccessful applicants are automatically credited to the original account, and any claims of guaranteed allotments should be treated as suspicious. Fraud tactics are expected to mirror recent trends in India, including urgent calls or messages demanding immediate payments to avoid application cancellation.
Cybercriminals are also deploying malicious APKs disguised as official scheme applications, which can steal banking credentials upon installation. Counterfeit websites mimicking the official Indiramma portal are another risk, designed to collect personal and financial data under false pretenses. Additionally, fraudsters may诱导 victims to install screen-sharing tools like AnyDesk or TeamViewer, granting access to banking apps and one-time passwords.
UPI PIN Rule and Expert Advice
A critical guideline from the police is the UPI PIN rule: it is required only for sending funds, not for receiving them. Requests for UPI PINs to process refunds, verify eligibility, or complete government transactions are inherently fraudulent.
Cybercrime expert Prof. Triveni Singh highlighted that welfare schemes are frequent targets due to public trust in government programs and the pressure of deadlines. He advised applicants to verify all information through official channels, avoid sharing sensitive data like Aadhaar numbers or OTPs, and reject any deviations from the scheme’s direct-refund policy.
Urgent Warnings and Next Steps
With the application window set to close in three weeks, authorities warn that the next few days will represent the peak risk period for participants. The combination of high demand, time-sensitive payments, and public reliance on digital processes makes the scheme particularly vulnerable to exploitation. Residents are urged to remain vigilant and adhere strictly to verified procedures to avoid falling victim to scams.
