Pune Man Foils Digital Arrest Scam Saving Family Members
Father Foils Extortion Attempt by Digital Scammers
An 81-year-old resident of Pune recently thwarted an attempted extortion scheme targeting his son and daughter-in-law, exposing a sophisticated digital scam designed to instill fear and elicit large sums of money.
The Scam Unfolds:
On April 19th, the victim, a chemical engineer, received a phone call from an unknown number purporting to be an officer from the Mumbai Police Crime Branch. The caller claimed to have intercepted a package containing illicit substances and passports, allegedly destined for the victim.
The scammers then coerced the victims into participating in a video call via the Signal messaging application. During this call, a man dressed in a police uniform appeared on-screen, reinforcing the fabricated narrative. The duo was repeatedly intimidated throughout the night, effectively placed under “digital arrest” within their own home.
The Turning Point:
However, the situation took a dramatic turn when the victims’ father intervened, noticing his son’s distress and questioning him about the matter. This led to the exposure of the scam, prompting the victims to immediately inform the police and file a formal complaint.
Most importantly, they stress that legitimate arrests cannot be carried out digitally, and victims should promptly report the incident to local law enforcement.
A Warning to Citizens:
This incident highlights the evolving tactics employed by scammers to exploit vulnerabilities in individuals and families. As technology continues to advance, it is crucial for citizens to stay vigilant and educated about potential threats, ensuring they can protect themselves and their loved ones from these types of digital scams.
