Social Media Scams Exploit Old Notes, Leading to Costly Cyber Fraud
A resident of Sikar reported losing ₹4.08 lakh after falling victim to a scam involving false promises of high-value purchases for obsolete currency notes.
The incident highlights vulnerabilities in online transactions and the risks associated with unsolicited digital advertisements. The victim, identified as Girish, encountered a social media advertisement approximately one to one-and-a-half months prior to the report. The ad claimed to offer substantial compensation for old ₹1, ₹2, and ₹5 currency notes. Upon clicking the advertisement, Girish engaged with the perpetrators, who later contacted him via phone. The fraudsters allegedly assured him of receiving a significant sum in exchange for the notes but instead requested multiple payments under various justifications. The scammers demanded funds for processing fees, administrative charges, and other unspecified costs. Girish executed several PhonePe transactions to designated numbers as instructed. The total amount transferred amounted to ₹4,08,746. Despite these payments, he received no compensation for the currency notes he provided. After realizing the deception, Girish filed a complaint with the Cyber Police Station. Authorities noted that the mobile devices used by the suspects remained inactive, preventing further investigation.
The case underscores the tactics employed by cybercriminals to exploit trust in digital platforms. The scheme relied on initial promises of high-value exchanges to lure victims, followed by demands for advance payments. This approach is commonly used in financial fraud to create a sense of urgency and legitimacy. Experts advise caution when encountering offers requiring upfront payments, particularly through unverified sources or unknown contacts. The incident serves as a reminder of the importance of verifying the authenticity of online advertisements and avoiding transactions labeled as processing fees or other unexplained charges. Cybersecurity professionals emphasize the need for heightened vigilance when engaging with digital platforms, especially those offering unusually high returns for mundane items.
