US-Based Cybersecurity Professionals Indicted for Involvement in Ransomware Attacks

Two former cybersecurity professionals from the United States, Ryan Goldberg and Kevin Martin, have been sentenced to four years in prison following their involvement in a high-profile ransomware attack.

  • Ryan Goldberg was employed by a leading cybersecurity firm in Georgia, while Kevin Martin worked for a rival company in Texas.
  • Their colleague, Angelo Martino, a Florida-based individual, also participated in the scheme and awaits sentencing.

The Scheme Unfolds

The trio initially worked together at various cybersecurity firms, operating as ransomware negotiators.

  • However, they eventually turned to conducting ransomware attacks on multiple organizations, using the BlackCat and Alphv variants to extort payments from their victims.
  • According to authorities, the attackers managed to extract around $1.2 million from one victim and laundered their 80% cut via various channels.

The Impact

Over a period spanning from November 2021 to December 2023, the attackers targeted more than 1,000 organizations with BlackCat ransomware attacks before being disrupted by law enforcement.

  • Following this disruption, the attackers received a substantial $22 million ransom from a single victim before executing an exit scam.

“This case serves as a stark reminder of the risks associated with individuals within the cybersecurity community engaging in malicious activities, even if they possess expertise and resources typically utilized for defensive purposes. The consequences of such actions can be severe, leading to imprisonment and damage to the reputation of those involved.” – Law Enforcement Official

The Reward Offer

Law enforcement officials have offered a significant $10 million reward for information regarding key members of the ransomware group; however, no charges have been announced to date.
