Vashi Woman Falls Victim to Online Insurance Refund Scam Worth Lakhs
Recent Scammers Target Indian Citizen with Insurance Refund Scheme
A recent report has surfaced of a 43-year-old woman from Vashi losing approximately 61.49 lakhs due to a sophisticated phishing scheme carried out by a group of cybercriminals.
How the Scam Unfolded
The incident took place in July 2025 when the victim received a call from someone claiming to be an official from the National Payments Corporation of India (NPCI). The scammer provided the victim with what seemed like authentic information about her Bharti AXA insurance policy, including the policy number, thus gaining her trust.
The Manipulation Continues
Over the course of several interactions, the victim was repeatedly assured that her policy would be closed, and the premium amount would be refunded, but only if certain requirements were met, such as generating an agent code and undergoing cash conversion.
The Scammers Use Fake Communications
To further manipulate the victim, the scammers sent her fake email communications purportedly from the Insurance Ombudsman and NPCI, which included forged documents bearing the relevant organizations’ logos. Convinced of the legitimacy of these communications, the victim transferred a total of 61.49 lakhs over an extended period.
The Scheme is Uncovered
The scheme was eventually uncovered when the victim realized she had been deceived. Authorities were alerted, and a case was filed against the perpetrators.
Citizens Urged to Take Precautions
