Microsoft has issued a reminder to IT administrators that Windows Server 2022 is nearing its mainstream support expiration on October 13, 2026, after which it will transition to extended support.

Mainstream Support Expiration

The operating system, introduced as the Long-Term Servicing Channel (LTSC) release in March 2021 and made generally available in September 2021, was designed with a 10-year support lifecycle. According to Microsoft’s latest update, the final mainstream support update for Windows Server 2022 will be released in October 2026. Following this date, the system will enter extended support, which includes free security updates through October 14, 2031.

Windows Server 2025 and Extended Support

The company has urged organizations to migrate to Windows Server 2025, which became available in November 2024 after a preview phase for Windows Insiders in January 2024. Windows Server 2025 will remain in mainstream support until November 13, 2029, with extended support extending until November 14, 2034. Microsoft also highlighted a 180-day free trial for Windows Server 2025 through the Microsoft Evaluation Center to facilitate testing before deployment.

Support Transition Recommendations

The message emphasized that Windows Server 2025 is now the latest LTSC release, advising administrators to plan upgrades to ensure continued protection and support. The company recommended initiating evaluation and testing processes early to minimize disruption during the transition.

Additional Support Extensions

In parallel, Microsoft extended hotpatching for Windows Server 2022 Datacenter: Azure Edition until October 2027, one year beyond its mainstream support end date. Additionally, the free Windows 10 Extended Security Updates (ESU) program for consumers was expanded by an extra year. Recent updates also noted that Windows 11 23H2 Enterprise and Education editions will cease receiving updates on November 10, 2026.
