Chennai: Law enforcement authorities have dismantled an inter-state cybercrime operation following the detention of a 35-year-old individual from Manipur, who is alleged to have facilitated a large-scale online investment fraud scheme spanning multiple regions.

Suspect Details

According to officials, the suspect utilized deceptive mobile applications and adopted false identities, including posing as a delivery executive, to evade detection while orchestrating financial deception. The arrest is part of a broader initiative targeting organized digital financial crimes that have resulted in significant monetary losses for victims.

Arrest and Transfer

The detained individual, identified as Thounaojam Inaobi Singh, was apprehended in Bengaluru and subsequently transferred to Chennai, where a judicial court ordered his custody on Monday. Investigators claim Singh was directly involved in transferring approximately ₹20 lakh from the account of a 74-year-old Chennai resident, who reportedly lost ₹2.79 crore through an online trading scam.

Language and Coordination

Authorities noted Singh’s proficiency in Hindi, Manipuri, and Bengali, which allegedly enabled coordination with network members across different states. During the investigation, law enforcement recovered two mobile devices, four SIM cards, 23 debit cards, a passport, nine rental agreements, and additional documentation from Singh.

Seized Items

These items are under scrutiny to uncover digital evidence, financial transactions, and connections to other suspected participants in the alleged criminal enterprise. Additional seized items included three mobile phones, a tablet, a chequebook, company seals, and further incriminating records from other individuals linked to the network.

Fraudulent Operations

The operation involved the use of fraudulent investment platforms and counterfeit mobile applications to entice victims with promises of high returns on online trading activities. Once funds were deposited, the accused reportedly redirected the money through multiple bank accounts, debit cards, and digital payment systems to obscure the financial trail.

Investigation Scope

Investigators are currently examining electronic devices and financial records to assess the full scope of the alleged scheme. The arrest is part of a broader crackdown by the Chennai Police Cyber Crime Cell targeting organized cyber fraud groups.

Broader Crackdown

Recent coordinated operations across West Bengal, Uttar Pradesh, Karnataka, Maharashtra, and Rajasthan led to the arrest of 14 individuals, including four with pending non-bailable warrants. All detainees have been placed in judicial custody and are being held at Puzhal Central Prison as the probe continues.

Victim Impact

Senior police officials stated the arrests are connected to eight distinct cybercrime cases involving eight victims, with total losses estimated at ₹31.10 crore. The highest single-case loss amounted to ₹14.74 crore. Investigators believe the network operated through an interstate structure, employing multiple bank accounts, fabricated identities, and digital infrastructure to conduct illicit financial transactions and avoid detection.

Expert Insight

A cybersecurity expert and former IPS officer, Prof. Triveni Singh, highlighted that organized investment fraud groups increasingly exploit multi-state operations through fake trading platforms, rented banking accounts, and coordinated communication channels. These syndicates capitalize on public interest in high-yield investment opportunities while employing sophisticated financial layering techniques to obscure illicit proceeds.

Public Advice

The expert advised investors to verify the legitimacy of platforms through regulatory authorities, avoid guarantees of returns, and report suspicious activities to cybercrime helplines. Law enforcement continues to investigate the network, analyze seized electronic devices, and trace illicit financial flows.

Authorities’ Call to Action

Authorities have urged the public to exercise caution when evaluating investment opportunities, verify platform authenticity, and report any suspicious financial transactions or fraudulent trading schemes immediately.
