On the ED’s request, the government on Sunday banned 22 unlicensed betting and gambling websites and apps, including the contentious Mahadev Book Online app, according to an official announcement.
IT Ministry, Press Release.
|Following investigations by the ED “against illegal betting app syndicate and subsequent raids on Mahadev Book in Chhattisgarh, revealing the app’s unlawful operations,” the Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology (MeitY) issued the decision on Sunday.|
This occurred shortly after assets connected to the Mahadev online betting app worth Rs 417 crore were seized by the ED.
Subsequently, the investigation agency claimed that the business operated out of Dubai and generated Rs 450 crore in revenue each month by providing unlawful wagers using a cache of internet apps.
Rajeev Chandrasekhar, Minister of State for Electronics and Information Technology.
|“Under Section 69A of the IT Act, the Chhattisgarh government was fully empowered to suggest that a website or app be shut down.
But they refrained from doing so. They have spent the last year and a half looking into it.”
The minister accused Chief Minister Bhupesh Baghel, who is up for election in the state in December, of being inactive in a harsh post on X.
Similar directives to halt the “urgent” and “emergency” functioning of 138 betting and gambling apps were issued by the IT ministry in March of this year.
Nearly 400 gaming, gambling, betting, photo-editing, and other apps and websites have been blocked by the government in the past two years due to either connection to China, money laundering, or inappropriate handling of Indian nationals’ data.
