Cybercriminals are increasingly targeting unsuspecting travelers through sophisticated hotel booking scams, exploiting the surge in online travel bookings. These scams involve fake websites, fake travel agents, and deceptive payment demands, resulting in significant financial losses for victims across India.

Fake Websites and Travel Agents

Fraudsters create counterfeit hotel websites that closely resemble official portals, complete with images, logos, and attractive offers. These fake websites are designed to manipulate urgency and trust, often using techniques such as fake websites with similar names, heavy discounts to create urgency, and calls asking for payment outside official apps. Social media travel agents also demand advance payments for “confirmed” reservations, which are often fake.

Recent Busts and Losses

Law enforcement agencies have recently busted multiple hotel booking fraud rackets, highlighting the growing threat. In one case, an accused created fraudulent hotel booking websites and duped victims by posing as hotel staff. Another investigation uncovered a gang that used cloned hotel websites to cheat 83 victims of over ₹13 lakh.

Precautions to Avoid Falling Victim

To avoid falling victim to these scams, cybersecurity experts and law enforcement agencies recommend several precautions. Travelers should carefully check the website URL before making any booking, use trusted booking platforms or official hotel websites, and avoid transferring money to personal UPI IDs without verification. Verifying hotel details through Google Maps and customer reviews before making payments is also crucial.

Experts also advise travelers to be cautious of deals that appear too good to be true, as fraudsters often use unrealistic discounts to lure victims.

What to Do If You’re a Victim

If someone becomes a victim of hotel booking fraud, quick action can increase the chances of recovering the lost money. Victims should immediately inform their bank and block the card or payment method used, report the fraud to the National Cybercrime Helpline, and file an online complaint on the National Cyber Crime Reporting Portal.

Awareness is Key

As digital travel bookings continue to grow, awareness remains the strongest defense against these cyber scams. Travelers are advised to verify every booking carefully and avoid making payments outside trusted platforms.
