Unauthorized Bank Account Transactions: No OTP Shared, Money Missing
An elderly individual from Sector 74 reported losing ₹4.66 lakh through multiple unauthorized transactions on their bank account over a two-day period.
How Was ₹4.66 Lakh Withdrawn?
The victim reported that several unauthorized transactions occurred between September 5 and 6, with funds transferred to multiple accounts. The individual discovered the activity while reviewing their account statements and submitted a report to the National Cyber Crime Reporting Portal on September 7. The case was then forwarded to the Cyber Crime Police Station and assigned to the Noida IT Cell for further examination.
No OTP Shared
The victim confirmed to investigators that they did not provide an OTP to any party and had not intentionally shared access to their banking credentials. This raises questions about the security measures in place and the potential vulnerabilities exploited to authorize the transactions. Authorities are currently analyzing digital evidence to determine how the account was accessed without traditional authentication methods.
Was the Mobile Phone Compromised?
Investigators are exploring the possibility that the victim’s mobile device was compromised, potentially allowing attackers to intercept or manipulate banking communications. The phone’s digital activity is under scrutiny, including app usage, network connections, and potential malware presence. However, no conclusive evidence has been found to confirm this as the primary breach vector.
Where Did the Money Go?
Law enforcement is tracing the flow of the withdrawn funds to identify the recipient accounts. Investigators are examining transaction timestamps, beneficiary details, and banking records to determine if the money was transferred directly or routed through multiple accounts. This process is critical to establishing a clear trail of the fraudulent activity.
What Are Police Checking?
Authorities are reviewing all transactions originating from the victim’s account, focusing on anomalies such as unusual login attempts or unauthorized access prior to the fraudulent transfers. The investigation also includes a review of the victim’s mobile phone activity and banking history to identify potential entry points for the attackers. The exact mechanism used to execute the fraud remains under active investigation.
No OTP Does Not Mean No Risk This case underscores the importance of proactive monitoring of financial accounts, even in scenarios where traditional authentication methods like OTPs are not involved. Victims are advised to regularly review transaction histories, report suspicious activity immediately, and retain digital evidence such as messages and transaction records. Cybersecurity experts emphasize that breaches can occur through alternative vectors, including compromised devices, phishing attacks, or vulnerabilities in banking infrastructure.
