Army Officer and College Student Fall Victim to Cyber Fraud, Suffer Financial Loss
An Army officer and a college student in Narmadapuram district reported cyber fraud incidents, with funds allegedly transferred from their bank accounts following deceptive communications and mobile device compromises.
Deceptive Messaging Triggers Financial Losses
The first incident involved an Army officer who received a mobile message on July 30 alleging an overdue electricity bill. The message included a contact number, which the officer called. The caller instructed the officer to click on a provided link to update payment details. After accessing the link, the officer received a notification of unauthorized fund withdrawal from his bank account. He promptly notified the bank and filed a police report. A subsequent investigation by the cyber cell confirmed the breach, though no further details about the attack vector were disclosed.
Mobile Device Compromise Leads to Unauthorized Transactions
A separate case emerged when a college student in Makhan Nagar reported his mobile phone being hacked on the evening of August 2. After restarting the device, all applications were erased. The student reinstalled the PhonePe app and discovered ₹46,000 had been withdrawn from his account. The complaint did not specify the method used to compromise the device or the exact mechanism of the transaction. This incident aligns with a broader pattern of cyber fraud targeting diverse demographics, including students, government personnel, and elderly individuals.
Rising Incidents Highlight Persistent Threats
Over the past week, authorities have documented more than 12 cyber fraud cases in the district. Between July 1 and July 7, victims reported losses exceeding ₹5 lakh through fraudulent activities. These cases involve tactics such as deceptive messages, malicious links, and mobile-based attacks designed to exploit user trust. Despite ongoing public awareness initiatives, including community outreach programs and educational campaigns, fraudsters continue to employ evolving methods to target bank account holders. Law enforcement agencies are investigating the reported incidents while emphasizing the need for heightened vigilance. Victims are advised to monitor account activity regularly and avoid engaging with unsolicited communications. The cases underscore the urgency of strengthening digital security measures to mitigate financial losses from cybercrime.
