Uttarakhand STF and cyber crime police raided a suspected call centre in Dehradun, uncovering fraudulent credit card-related activities.

Raid Details and Recovered Evidence

During the investigation, law enforcement recovered a 32-slot SIM box manufactured by DINSTAR, 45 SIM cards, a laptop, two routers, and two ATM cards. The SIM box, capable of masking call origins and facilitating unauthorized communication, was identified as a key tool in the scheme.

Recovered Data and Financial Institutions

The laptop contained sensitive data linked to customers of multiple financial institutions, including SBI, Bank of Baroda, Axis Bank, Poonawalla Finance, Yes Bank, and RBL. Authorities are analyzing the materials to determine the source of the data and its usage in targeting individuals.

Deceptive Practices and Coercive Tactics

The call centre allegedly engaged in deceptive practices by contacting bank customers under the guise of offering credit card benefits. Police reported that callers used private mobile numbers rather than official 1600 series numbers, bypassing standard verification protocols. The operation involved coercive tactics, with some individuals allegedly pressured to transfer funds rapidly.

Extraction of Confidential Information

This approach aimed to extract confidential information such as OTPs, PINs, and internet banking credentials. Investigators noted that the use of personalized data enhanced the credibility of the fraudsters, making victims more susceptible to manipulation.

Investigation and Public Advice

The recovered evidence suggests the call centre exploited compromised customer records to execute its schemes. Authorities have emphasized the importance of verifying the authenticity of unsolicited communications. Individuals receiving calls from unknown numbers claiming to represent financial institutions are advised to independently confirm the caller’s identity through official channels.

Steps for Victims and Reporting

Customers are urged to refrain from sharing sensitive information and to report suspicious activity immediately. Victims of potential fraud are encouraged to contact the cyber helpline at 1930 and notify their respective banks to secure accounts and prevent further exploitation.

Importance of Digital Evidence and Vigilance

Preserving digital evidence, including call logs, messages, and transaction records, is critical for investigative efforts. Law enforcement has reiterated warnings about the risks of engaging with unverified entities and stressed the need for heightened vigilance in financial interactions.

The case highlights vulnerabilities in data security and the growing sophistication of cybercriminal networks. Financial institutions and regulatory bodies are expected to reinforce measures to detect and mitigate similar threats. Consumers are advised to remain cautious and adhere to established protocols when handling sensitive financial matters.
