Patna Cyber Police Expose Mule Account Network Linked to Hundreds of Villagers
Patna Cyber Police Uncover Mule Account Network Involving Hundreds of Villagers
Case Unfolds in Pandarak Village
The case came to light in Pandarak village under the Barh police station jurisdiction of Patna district following complaints from local residents.
Sita Devi’s Role in the Scheme
During the investigation, authorities discovered that approximately 400 to 500 villagers had allegedly opened bank accounts under false pretenses. A cyber police team was deployed to the area after receiving the initial report. During interviews with community members, a 50-year-old woman named Sita Devi emerged as a central figure. Officials allege she convinced villagers to open accounts by promising access to government welfare programs, including initiatives related to grain distribution, sanitation infrastructure, and other public benefits.
Exploitation of Mule Accounts
Investigators determined that bank accounts were established and ATM cards activated after villagers were misled about potential financial incentives. Cybercriminals subsequently exploited these accounts to process funds obtained through fraudulent activities. The probe also revealed that loans amounting to lakhs of rupees were allegedly secured using mule accounts opened in the names of unsuspecting individuals. Victims reportedly only became aware of the scheme after the illicit operations were exposed.
Arrest and Evidence Recovery
Sita Devi allegedly confessed to her role in the scheme during questioning, leading to her arrest. During the investigation, law enforcement conducted a search at the residence of an alleged network operator. Authorities recovered multiple mobile devices, a two-way radio, numerous SIM cards, bank cheque books, passbooks, and ATM cards.
Financial Impact and Ongoing Investigation
The scale of the operation has raised concerns about how such a large volume of accounts and communication tools were coordinated for financial crimes. Investigators are also examining potential lapses by financial institutions in verifying account holders’ identities. Estimates suggest the total losses from the fraud could surpass ₹5 crore, though the final figure will be determined after the inquiry concludes. Cyber police are continuing searches to identify and apprehend additional individuals linked to the network.
Authorities’ Warnings and Awareness
The case underscores the vulnerability of individuals who are coerced or deceived into participating in financial schemes, particularly when accounts are obtained through promises of government assistance. The investigation is focused on tracing the creation and management of the accounts, as well as the movement of illicit funds through the network. Authorities emphasize the need for heightened awareness to prevent similar incidents, where unsuspecting citizens become unwitting participants in cyber-enabled financial crimes.
