Aadhaar Data Security Breach: Fake Video Loan Scam Exposed in Gujarat
Highly Sophisticated Cyber Fraud Network Involving AI and Deepfake Technology Uncovered in Gujarat
Indian investigators have exposed a complex cyber-fraud operation utilizing artificial intelligence (AI) and deepfake technology to manipulate Aadhaar-linked data and facilitate unauthorized digital loan transactions.
The Scheme:
The scheme, centered in Gujarat’s Ahmedabad, has resulted in the arrest of seven suspects, including three from Assam and Uttar Pradesh. The gang, which allegedly operated on a large scale, exploited vulnerabilities in online verification systems to obtain instant digital loans worth millions of rupees.
Methodology:
They achieved this by altering Aadhaar-linked mobile numbers, activating new SIM cards, opening bank accounts, and securing multiple small-value digital loans ranging from 250,000 to 500,000 rupees. Investigators say the gang used advanced digital tools and identity manipulation techniques to bypass online verification systems.
According to officials, the gang gathered personal data, including GST and PAN-related information, through websites such as “Master India” and examined CIBIL scores and financial records to identify potential targets eligible for quick digital loans.
Avoiding Detection:
The suspects then created AI-generated “deepfake blinking videos” to deceive online verification and biometric authentication systems. These videos appeared highly realistic and tricked automated identity verification mechanisms used by financial platforms.
Once the mobile number was changed, the accused activated new SIM cards, opened bank accounts, and secured multiple small-value digital loans. Officials believe the fraud was repeated across several victims using layered digital identities and mule bank accounts.
Discovery:
The scam came to light when a businessman in Ahmedabad stopped receiving OTPs linked to his Aadhaar-enabled payment system. Further investigation revealed that his Aadhaar-linked mobile number and biometric details had been altered without any OTP-based confirmation.
Cybercrime officials estimate that the gang was illegally obtaining approximately 10 lakh to 15 lakh rupees every year through fraudulent digital loan applications. Seven accused have been arrested so far, while another suspect remains absconding.
Expert Insights:
Renowned cybercrime expert and former IPS officer Professor Triveni Singh stated that AI and deepfake technologies are being increasingly misused for digital identity theft, biometric fraud, and financial crimes. He emphasized that cybercriminals are integrating these tools into organized financial fraud and identity manipulation operations, making cybercrime investigations far more challenging.
Concerns:
The case raises serious concerns regarding the safety of India’s digital identity infrastructure and Aadhaar-based authentication ecosystem. Investigating agencies are now examining Aadhaar records, banking transactions, SIM activation histories, and digital server logs to identify the full extent of the network.
Investigation Ongoing:
The investigating agencies are still examining all possible leads to bring the remaining absconding suspect to justice and prevent similar incidents in the future.
