Patna Police have detained a suspect from Jharkhand for leveraging artificial intelligence-generated deepfakes to extort a 12-year-old boy, revealing a coordinated cybercrime network.

The Incident in Punaichak

The incident, which occurred in the Punaichak area under Shastri Nagar jurisdiction, led to the arrest of Sunil Sau, a Hazaribagh resident, following an investigation into the death of a minor. The victim, Ayush Singh, a Class 7 student and son of a local tailor, was discovered deceased in his family’s rented home on July 11.

Digital Forensics and Extortion

Examination of his smartphone uncovered evidence of sustained psychological manipulation by an individual using a fabricated profile depicting a young woman. Digital forensic analysis confirmed the profile was managed by Sau, who employed generative AI tools to alter the child’s photographs into explicit deepfakes.

Threats and Financial Demands

The perpetrator threatened to disseminate the altered images among the boy’s peers and contacts, compelling him to transfer funds. Over two transactions, the victim surrendered ₹2,500 in small electronic transfers. As demands escalated and threats intensified, the psychological pressure reportedly led to the child’s death.

Policing the Cybercrime Network

Law enforcement traced the suspect through a multi-state operation, apprehending him in Hazaribagh on August 14 and transporting him to Patna for interrogation. Investigations revealed digital records linking the accused to an organized cyber fraud syndicate operating across state lines.

Seized Evidence and Financial Links

Seized devices contained deepfake creation software, extortion logs, and financial records indicating significant monetary activity. Authorities also identified documentation tied to a ₹50 Lakh land purchase, suspected to be funded by proceeds from cyber extortion schemes.

Ongoing Investigation and Family Concerns

While police classify the case as a cyber-fraud-related suicide, the victim’s family has raised concerns about physical harm, citing injuries on the child’s body and irregularities at the scene. A comprehensive investigation, including forensic pathology and digital evidence analysis, is ongoing.

The incident underscores growing risks to minors in unregulated digital spaces, prompting calls for stricter enforcement of cybersecurity laws. Government agencies under the Digital India initiative have reiterated warnings for parents and institutions to monitor youth internet access.
