A cybersecurity incident involving a widely shared AI-generated media trend has been reported in Amroha, where malicious actors are leveraging the popularity of 1980s-style visual effects to distribute phishing links. Three individuals have been identified as victims after engaging with suspicious messages, with one experiencing financial loss. Cybercriminals are exploiting the AI-driven “80s nostalgia” trend, which allows users to alter photos and videos to resemble retro aesthetics, by sending deceptive links via mobile numbers. These messages claim to offer access to tools that replicate the effect, enticing recipients to click. Upon interaction, devices are compromised, enabling unauthorized access to financial accounts.

Victims and Their Experiences

The first reported case involved Mohammad Danish, a resident of Qureshi locality. He received a message from an unknown number promoting the trend, which he accessed by clicking the provided link. Following this action, his mobile device was reportedly taken over, leading to the unauthorized withdrawal of ₹16,000 from a bank account linked to the phone. Danish disconnected his device from the internet after detecting the breach. Two additional victims, Manoj Kumar from Mohalla Jayom Nagar and Arshad from Danishmandan, were targeted through similar methods. Both received unsolicited links claiming to provide access to the AI trend. However, their bank accounts were not connected to their mobile numbers, preventing financial loss. All three cases were reported to the cybercrime helpline at 1930.
