Children Exposed to Rising Online Exploitation Risks: NCRB Reports Alarming Increase
Cyber Threats Targeting Children Surge Exponentially Across India
According to a recent report released by the National Crime Records Bureau (NCRB), the number of cyber crimes committed against children has seen a staggering surge over the past few years.
Key Statistics
- Total number of cyber crimes against children in 2024: 1,87,702 (a 46% increase since 2020)
- Majority of cases involve exploitation through obscene digital content on online platforms: 90%
The NCRB report highlights state-wise trends, with Chhattisgarh leading the list with 268 reported cases, followed by Rajasthan with 174, Delhi with 151, Uttar Pradesh with 137, and Kerala with 92 cases.
Experts point out that social media, online gaming networks, and private chat applications have become primary gateways for cyber criminals to target minors. These platforms often lack adequate safeguards to prevent the spread of explicit content, making it easier for predators to groom and exploit vulnerable individuals.
Law enforcement agencies have acknowledged the rise in crimes against children and are taking steps to address this issue. They are strengthening AI-based monitoring and digital tracking capabilities to identify and apprehend perpetrators.
Action Plan
- Strengthening AI-based monitoring and digital tracking capabilities
- Promoting education and awareness among parents and children about online safety and the potential risks associated with social media and online interactions
Families, schools, and technology companies need to work together to ensure children’s digital safety and mitigate the risk of online exploitation.
