Did Spain and Portugal get cyberattacked? Could a Sudden Power Outage Be Done by Russia?
Monday Major Power Outages in Spain and Portugal are hampering Hospitals, Factories, Nuclear Power Plants, and Public Transport Systems.
Many parts of the Iberian Peninsula were still without power as of early Monday afternoon; reports indicated that outages were occurring from Madrid to Lisbon.
During Spain’s power outage, Eduardo Prieto, director of Spanish transmission system operator Red Eléctrica, said that the country’s power system “disconnected from the European system and the collapse of the Iberian electricity network at 12:38” due to a “very strong oscillation in the electrical network.”
Was it a Cyberattack?
Prieto declined to speculate on what might have caused the power spike or to address whether a hack might have contributed to the outage. The service will be fully operating throughout Spain in six to ten hours, he said. In certain places, the electricity has been restored, though.

Furthermore, Ribera said that they are being extremely cautious in their inquiry and would continue to look into the specific cause of this disaster, which is one of the worst to have struck Europe in a long time.

Issues
Spain has been the subject of cyberattacks because it opposes Israel’s assault in Gaza and supports Kyiv in its fight against Russian aggression. The blackout is being investigated by the Defense Staff-affiliated Joint Cyberspace Command, which oversees cybersecurity, and the National Cryptologic Center.
This occurrence makes me think of the previous attacks on the electricity grid, especially in Ukraine. In December 2015, a coordinated cyberattack linked to the Russian hacker organization Sandworm caused a power outage for some 230,000 Ukrainians.
A year later, a similar attack using the Industroyer malware caused more disruptions in Kyiv, according to SOFREP. However, Russia’s role in the power outages in Portugal and Spain has not yet been confirmed.
To determine the reason behind outages, cybersecurity officials are collaborating with grid operators from Portugal’s E-Redes and Spain’s Red Eléctrica. Concerns have been raised about how vulnerable critical infrastructure is to cyberattacks due to the outage’s abruptness and severity.
