Arrest and Operation Details
Police in Uttar Pradesh’s Azamgarh district have dismantled a cybercrime operation and detained an individual accused of defrauding victims of approximately ₹2.2 million (₹22 lakh) by distributing malicious links tied to pirated media content. The suspect was apprehended following intelligence gathered by the Cyber Cell and Maharajganj Police Station, which indicated an imminent attempt to withdraw illicit funds from an ATM. A coordinated operation led to the arrest, with investigators seizing two smartphones and a Royal Enfield Bullet motorcycle.
Methods Used in the Fraud
An initial probe uncovered connections to 17 bank accounts allegedly used to process and transfer proceeds from the fraud. Law enforcement alleges the accused utilized counterfeit Aadhaar cards to access funds through Common Service Centres (CSCs), leveraging these government-affiliated hubs to siphon money. The seized mobile devices were reportedly linked to SIM cards associated with the mule accounts, which received one-time passwords (OTPs) to execute unauthorized transactions. During interrogations, the suspect reportedly admitted to distributing APK file links via social media platforms, falsely claiming they provided free access to movies, web series, or premium applications.
Expert Advice on Cybersecurity
A former IPS officer and cybersecurity analyst, Prof. Triveni Singh, advised users to avoid downloading APKs from unknown sources and to restrict app installations to official app stores.
Ongoing Investigation and Public Awareness
Authorities are conducting a thorough examination of the seized devices, banking records, and digital evidence to trace the flow of illicit funds and identify potential accomplices. Investigators are also working to determine the operators of the mule accounts and map the financial movements linked to the scheme. If additional individuals are implicated, legal proceedings will be initiated under applicable cybercrime laws. Public awareness campaigns have been reinforced, urging users to exercise caution when encountering suspicious links on social media, messaging apps, or other digital platforms. The case underscores the evolving tactics of cybercriminals who exploit entertainment demand to execute financial fraud.
