Hyderabad’s Daily Cyber Fraud Loss Hits ₹1 Crore, Says Police Chief Sajjanar
Hyderabad Police Commissioner V.C. Sajjanar outlines a comprehensive strategy to address escalating cybercrime, drug trafficking, and food adulteration in the city.
Cybercrime Strategy
The police force is implementing a technology-driven approach to counter digital fraud, which has resulted in daily financial losses of Rs. 1 crore for residents. This significant impact has prompted law enforcement to shift from traditional policing methods toward advanced investigative techniques.
Systemic Measures
Sajjanar emphasized that apprehending individual offenders is insufficient, advocating for systemic measures to disrupt the financial infrastructure supporting these crimes. Central to this effort is the identification and elimination of mule bank accounts and ghost SIM card networks.
Collaboration with Sectors
Sajjanar called on the banking sector to conduct rigorous audits to ensure no mule accounts exist within their systems. He highlighted the importance of real-time collaboration between financial institutions, telecom providers, and law enforcement to dismantle fake SIM card operations.
Cybercrime expert Professor Triveni Singh supported this approach, stressing the necessity of coordinated information sharing to neutralize organized criminal networks.
Drug Trafficking and De-Addiction
The city’s police restructuring includes a unified command structure overseeing critical locations such as Rajiv Gandhi International Airport, the State Secretariat, and the High Court. This reorganization aims to enhance operational efficiency and address challenges like drug trafficking.
Dismantling Networks
Recent operations have led to the dismantling of multiple drug distribution networks, paired with the expansion of de-addiction centers to tackle both supply and demand factors.
Public Health Initiatives
Police patrols now include routine checks for substance abuse, reflecting a holistic strategy to address crime rooted in poverty and addiction.
Food Adulteration
Public health initiatives also focus on combating food adulteration, with a dedicated Anti-Adulteration Unit working alongside state agencies to enforce legal reforms.
Urban Mobility
Urban mobility challenges, exacerbated by rapid growth, are being managed through infrastructure projects like the H-CITI initiative, which includes new flyovers. However, long-term solutions depend on integrating advanced technologies into policing.
Technology in Policing
Artificial intelligence and predictive analytics are being deployed to monitor criminal behavior, forecast crime patterns, and optimize CCTV systems. These tools prioritize public safety, particularly for vulnerable populations.
Future Plans
The department’s future plans emphasize combining digital surveillance with community engagement to create a resilient urban security framework. The National Cyber Crime Helpline remains a critical resource for victims, with timely reporting significantly improving the chances of recovering stolen funds.
