Suspects’ Details

The cyber fraud suspects were detained following a raid in Palash forest near the Sakalpur-Gopalpur road under the Karmatanr police station jurisdiction on Saturday evening. Authorities arrested 25-year-old Farooq Ansari, 30-year-old Samsuddin Ansari, 22-year-old Jani Babu, and 24-year-old Kaleem Ansari, all local residents. The suspects were found in possession of mobile phones and SIM cards, which are being examined for links to financial crimes.

Cyber Fraud Suspects’ Method

Investigations indicate the accused targeted victims by offering assistance with banking app activation or functionality. They allegedly convinced individuals to grant access to their devices through screen-sharing tools, enabling them to capture sensitive data such as user IDs, passwords, and one-time passwords. This information was reportedly used to execute unauthorized fund transfers via online banking platforms.

A cybersecurity expert highlighted the growing reliance on social engineering tactics by fraudsters, emphasizing that even routine requests for technical support can expose critical financial information. The expert advised users to avoid sharing authentication codes, passwords, or device access with unverified parties and to seek assistance exclusively through official banking channels.

Separate Mobile-Snatching Case

In a separate case, two suspects were arrested in connection with a mobile-snatching incident reported on August 27. Rahul Singh and Dinesh Das, both in their mid-20s and residents of Piersol under the Chitra police station area, were detained during a vehicle checkpoint operation. Authorities recovered two smartphones and a motorcycle linked to the crime.

Police are conducting forensic analysis on the seized devices to determine communication patterns, identify associated phone numbers, and trace the origin of the SIM cards.
