Indians Trapped in Myanmar Cyber Scam Compounds: 1,000 Reportedly Held
Up to 1,000 Indian nationals are reportedly detained in cyber fraud facilities within Myanmar after being lured through deceptive employment schemes.
Deceptive Employment Schemes Target Individuals
A 30-year-old individual from Nashik, Maharashtra, shared a video requesting intervention from Indian government agencies. He claimed to have been promised a call center position in Bangkok with a monthly income of ₹70,000 but was instead transported to a cyber fraud site in Myanmar. His family reported that captors are demanding ₹8 lakh for his release.
Similar cases have been documented involving individuals from Uttar Pradesh and Bihar, including Mohammad Usman Ansari, Mohammad Hasan Raza, and Anuranjan Kumar.
Forced Participation in Cyber Fraud Operations
Victims describe being compelled to engage in online fraud activities, with failure to meet quotas resulting in physical abuse, electrocution, and other forms of coercion. The alleged scam operations are situated in fortified locations such as KK Park and Shwe Kokko in Myanmar’s Myawaddy region, near the Thailand-Myanmar border. These sites are reportedly managed by transnational criminal networks, with local armed factions providing security.
Ongoing Government and International Efforts
The Indian government, via the Ministry of External Affairs and associated agencies, has successfully repatriated over 2,400 citizens from similar fraud facilities in Myanmar, Cambodia, and Laos within the past two years. Ongoing operations aim to locate and assist remaining individuals.
A global non-governmental organization focused on human trafficking estimates that more than 5,300 foreigners remain trapped in such environments. The United Nations has indicated that over 100,000 individuals may be working under duress in cyber fraud compounds across Myanmar.
Conclusion
The situation highlights the urgent need for international collaboration to combat transnational cyber fraud networks and protect vulnerable individuals from exploitation.
