India’s I4C Launches Crackdown on Unlawful Online Content as Takedown Norms Accelerate
New Delhi: India’s efforts to combat illicit digital material have intensified through enhanced protocols managed by the Indian Cyber Crime Coordination Centre (I4C) and the Sahyog Portal, facilitating expedited responses to prohibited content on major online platforms.
Regulatory Update: Shortened Takedown Window
A regulatory update in February 2026 modified the IT Intermediaries Rules 2021, shortening the required takedown window for unlawful material from 36 hours to three hours. This adjustment aims to mitigate the rapid dissemination of harmful content across platforms serving India’s extensive internet population.
Takedown Statistics and Content Trends
With approximately 600 million users generating up to 78,703 online items every 68 seconds, authorities acknowledge that unauthorized posts are an unavoidable byproduct of such a vast digital ecosystem. Government officials have reiterated that regulatory oversight remains a critical obligation, necessitating proactive measures to address emerging threats.
Between March and July 2026, 298,000 URLs were flagged for removal. Of these, 244,000 (82%) originated from state governments, while I4C reported 51,000 URLs linked to cybercrime, infrastructure vulnerabilities, and stock market fraud schemes.
Sahyog Portal: Central to Content Removal
Over the past two years, the majority of content flagged by I4C has involved cross-border financial deception, child sexual abuse material (CSAM), and offenses targeting women and minors. The Sahyog Portal functions as the primary interface for state and central agencies to notify IT intermediaries about prohibited content.
Collaboration with Meta Enhances Takedown Efficiency
Only designated officials authorized by relevant ministries or state governments can issue such notifications, which are subject to periodic governmental review. Platforms are obligated to act on verified alerts from accredited authorities. A 2025 collaboration with Meta incorporated API integration, enhancing the efficiency of takedown procedures.
Balancing Rapid Enforcement with Safeguards
Officials have highlighted that these initiatives balance rapid enforcement with procedural safeguards, ensuring platforms respond promptly while upholding accountability within the digital landscape.
