A Kanpur resident fell victim to a sophisticated cyber fraud scheme after being lured with a deceptive job opportunity at a prominent financial institution.

The Scam Unfolds

The incident involved a staged online recruitment process that ultimately resulted in the victim losing over ₹1.80 lakh. According to the case details, the individual was initially contacted via phone by an unidentified person claiming to represent a major organization. The caller allegedly offered employment in a finance role and outlined an online recruitment procedure.

The Initial Contact

The victim, believing the offer to be legitimate, participated in a mobile-based interview and was subsequently informed of his selection. The fraudsters then presented a seven-day training program as a prerequisite for permanent employment, assuring the victim of compensation during this period.

Escalation of Fraud

Over the following days, the accused directed the victim to collect sensitive personal information from third parties, including Aadhaar and PAN card details. This activity escalated when the victim was instructed to visit a residence in Kalyanpur to obtain additional documents, including four blank signed cheques.

Financial Exploitation

The scheme took a critical turn when the victim was compelled to handle financial transactions under false pretenses. He was first asked to pay ₹8,910 for processing fees, followed by an additional ₹29,000. Subsequently, the accused instructed the victim to deposit ₹1.03 lakh into his personal bank account before transferring the funds to another account linked to an individual named Ramkumar Sharma.

Confrontation and Exposure

Upon returning home, the victim encountered a confrontation with the woman’s husband, who accused him of fraudulent activity. This revelation exposed the victim as an unwitting participant in a larger deception. The complainant alleged that the same network had previously defrauded another individual of ₹99,000, with funds channeled through his account.

Investigation and Advice

The victim reported the incident to local authorities, prompting an investigation into the fraudulent operations. Law enforcement officials are analyzing digital evidence, including bank transaction records, communication logs, and electronic payment trails, to identify the perpetrators. Investigators are also examining whether the suspects operated a broader fake recruitment scheme by exploiting the reputation of established companies.

Cybercrime experts highlighted the increasing prevalence of employment-related scams, emphasizing that fraudsters often use online interviews and high-paying job offers to manipulate victims. They advised job seekers to verify recruitment opportunities exclusively through official company channels, refrain from sharing sensitive documents or blank cheques with unverified parties, and avoid transferring funds for any recruitment-related fees. Authorities urge individuals encountering similar schemes to report incidents immediately through designated cybercrime reporting mechanisms.

Conclusion

The case underscores the growing threat of cyber fraud in recruitment processes. Victims are often manipulated through false promises of employment and financial incentives. It is critical for individuals to remain vigilant and follow verified procedures when engaging with job opportunities.
