Polish Security Agency Discloses Cyber Attacks on 5 Water Treatment Facilities
Incidents of Industrial Control System Breaches Increase in Poland
In recent years, Poland’s internal security agency, the Agency for National Security (ABW), has reported a significant rise in cyberattacks targeting industrial control systems (ICS) and operational technology (OT) infrastructure.
Water Treatment Facilities Targeted
The majority of incidents involved direct intrusions into ICS at water treatment facilities across multiple Polish municipalities.
According to the agency, breaches occurred at five water treatment stations in Jabłonna Lacka, Szczytno, Małdyty, Tolkmicko, and Sierakowo.
Attack Vectors Identified
The agency identified weak password policies and systems exposed directly to the internet as the primary attack vectors.
- Weakened password policies
- Systems exposed to the internet
Consequences of Incidents
The consequences of these incidents highlight the importance of implementing robust security measures, including regular updates, secure passwords, and limiting exposure to the internet, to prevent similar breaches in the future.
