Sri Lanka Cracks Down on Cybercrime with Large-Scale Arrests of Foreign Suspects
Sri Lankan Authorities Take Aim at Cybercrime
Sri Lankan authorities have made significant strides in combating cybercrime, with over 1,000 foreign suspects arrested since the beginning of the year.
Displacement of Scam Networks
This surge in arrests is largely attributed to the displacement of scam networks from neighboring countries such as Cambodia and Myanmar, which have relocated to Sri Lanka due to its relaxed visa regulations and stable high-speed internet connectivity.
Raid and Deportation Operations
These networks have established operations in various parts of the country, often renting luxury villas, office buildings, and other properties to conduct their illicit activities. However, law enforcement agencies have taken notice of this trend and have launched a series of raids and deportation operations to disrupt these groups.
Seizure of Equipment and Investigation of Recent Attack
In addition to the arrests, Sri Lankan authorities have also seized hundreds of used mobile phones and laptops, which were allegedly intended for use in large-scale fraud operations. Furthermore, investigators are examining whether foreign criminal groups were involved in a recent cyberattack on the Sri Lankan Ministry of Finance, resulting in losses of approximately $2.5 million.
Regional Concerns Deepen
Regional concerns are deepening as the issue of online crime continues to grow, with at least 300,000 people reportedly trafficked into scam centers in Southeast Asia.
Sri Lankan Officials’ Response
Sri Lankan officials, however, claim that they have not found evidence of foreign nationals being trafficked into the country, although dozens of Sri Lankans have been rescued from scam centers abroad over the past year.
Efforts to Combat Online Crime
To combat the rising tide of cybercrime, Sri Lankan authorities are stepping up their efforts to deport foreigners who have overstayed their visas and to punish those involved in online crime through the courts. With cooperation from international partners, including the Chinese embassy in Colombo, the Sri Lankan government remains committed to addressing the issue of online crime and ensuring the safety of its citizens.
