Corporate employees and professionals were among 101 individuals arrested in a ₹17 crore cyber fraud operation across seven states.

Operation Overview

A coordinated cybercrime operation led by the Telangana Cyber Security Bureau (TGCSB) resulted in the arrest of 101 individuals, including 18 women, across seven states and Union Territories. The investigation, spanning two weeks, uncovered fraudulent activities involving approximately ₹17 crore, with several corporate employees and professionals implicated.

Key Details of the Operation

The operation, initiated on September 23, involved synchronized raids across southern India. Over 100 TGCSB personnel, organized into six specialized teams, conducted arrests in Kerala, Andhra Pradesh, Karnataka, Tamil Nadu, Telangana, and Puducherry. Kerala accounted for 35 arrests, followed by Andhra Pradesh with 22, Karnataka with 17, Tamil Nadu with 14, Telangana with 12, and Puducherry with one.

Roles of Arrested Individuals

Among those detained, 81 were identified as mule-account holders, while 19 were classified as agents. These individuals allegedly facilitated the movement of illicit funds by providing bank accounts to cybercriminals in exchange for commissions of up to 5% of the transferred amounts. Investigators noted that the accused used multiple banking channels to obscure transaction trails, including ATM withdrawals, bulk transfers, and international transfers.

Investigation Findings

Professional Backgrounds of Arrested Individuals

The investigation revealed the involvement of individuals from diverse professional and educational backgrounds. A Tata Capital employee was accused of aiding mule accounts for commissions, while a Flipkart graduate was linked to 50 cybercrime cases. A Manju Group of Companies marketing head, an M.Com graduate, was connected to 15 cases, and a film technology diploma holder was implicated in 26 cases. Ex-servicemen and individuals with varying educational qualifications, including uneducated suspects, were also arrested.

Case Statistics and Trends

TGCSB reported that 1,172 cybercrime cases across India were linked to the suspects, with 206 cases directly connected to the operation. Fifty of the arrested individuals had ties to more than five cases each, suggesting repeated involvement in fraudulent activities. The bureau is examining potential interstate and international connections, as well as links to organized cybercrime groups.

Public Advisory and Conclusion

Public Advisory

TGCSB has advised the public to remain vigilant against fake trading platforms, investment scams, and digital fraud schemes. The bureau emphasized that allowing others to use bank accounts for commission-based transactions, particularly with unclear origins, could expose individuals to legal risks.

The case underscores how organized cybercrime networks rely on intermediaries to obscure financial flows, with corporate professionals and educated individuals playing roles in these schemes. Law enforcement continues to investigate the full scope of the network, including potential international ties and additional suspects. The operation highlights the growing complexity of cyberfraud and the need for heightened awareness and regulatory measures to combat such activities.
