Doctor Appointment Scam Exposes Weaknesses in Banking Security in Uttar Pradesh

A recent case of cyber fraud in Badaun, Uttar Pradesh, highlights the vulnerability of Indian banking systems to sophisticated scams.

A woman lost Rs. 9.70 lakhs in 19 unauthorized transactions after falling prey to a “doctor appointment” scam.

According to the cyber-crime complaint filed by the victim’s husband, no one involved shared their One-Time Password (OTP), Personal Identification Number (PIN), or Card Verification Value (CVV) with the scammers.

The incident occurred when she received a call from an unknown individual claiming to arrange a doctor’s appointment, requiring her to pay a mere Rs. 2 as a confirmation fee. Despite the seemingly innocuous nature of the request, the transaction turned into a massive banking heist.

  • The victim’s Bank of Baroda account was compromised, allowing hackers to execute 19 unauthorized transactions over four days, totaling Rs. 9.70 lakhs.
  • The family discovered the fraud only after receiving repeated debit alerts from the bank.

Cyber-Crime Experts Weigh In

Experts warn that small-value payment requests, like the one made in this case, are commonly used by scammers to trick victims into unwittingly granting access to their devices or banking systems.

They advise citizens to exercise extreme caution, particularly when dealing with sensitive subjects like medical emergencies, doctor consultations, and healthcare services.

Former IPS officer Prof. Triveni Singh emphasizes that cyber-criminals are exploiting psychological vulnerabilities through social engineering techniques.

Authorities urge individuals not to share banking details with unknown callers and to report suspicious transactions promptly.

In this case, the victim’s failure to act quickly resulted in significant financial loss. Experts caution that the first few hours following a cyber-fraud are critical, and delays can substantially reduce the chances of recovering the stolen funds.
