Indian Politician Falls Victim to Sophisticated Cyber Scam

A high-profile politician in India’s Uttar Pradesh state was recently targeted in a sophisticated cyber scam, in which attackers posed as law enforcement officials to extract sensitive information.

Details of the Scam

Shailendra Pratap Singh, a member of the Legislative Council (MLC) from the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), was deceived by the attackers, who made a video call to him on March 2, 2026, at 12:22 pm. The call lasted for approximately one hour and 45 minutes.

During the conversation, the attackers, who claimed to be from the Anti-Terrorism Squad (ATS) in Mumbai, displayed a fake police uniform background to create an atmosphere of legitimacy. They pressured Singh to share his Aadhaar card details, threatening him with legal action if he failed to comply.

Investigation and Findings

The incident was reported to the police, who launched an investigation and found that the mobile number used for the call was fake. A formal First Information Report (FIR) has been filed, and the Cybercrime Station House Officer is investigating the case.

According to cybersecurity experts, the incident highlights the growing threat of “digital arrest” scams, in which attackers impersonate law enforcement agencies to intimidate victims. These scams rely on psychological manipulation rather than technical hacking, making public awareness a crucial defense.

Renowned cybercrime expert and former IPS officer Prof. Triveni Singh noted that “cybercriminals are increasingly using social engineering tactics to create fear by pretending to be police or investigative agencies.” He emphasized the importance of public awareness in preventing such scams.

Prevention and Awareness

Authorities are advising citizens not to share personal identification documents, one-time passwords (OTPs), or sensitive information during suspicious calls. They are also urging people to verify the identity of callers claiming to be from police, courts, or government agencies by contacting official helplines.

The incident has highlighted the increasing sophistication of cyber fraud networks in India and the need for stronger digital awareness campaigns. Officials are emphasizing the importance of immediate reporting of suspicious calls to prevent such scams.

The police are currently investigating the cybercrime network behind the incident and are working to identify the individuals operating the fake call setup. Efforts are being made to determine whether the gang is involved in similar cases across other regions.
