Microsoft Gives Administrators Power to Uninstall Copilot on Enterprise Devices

Microsoft has announced that IT administrators can now remove the AI-powered Copilot digital assistant from enterprise devices using a newly available policy setting.

This Development Comes as Part of the April 2026 Patch Tuesday Update

The feature, known as RemoveMicrosoftCopilotApp, is available through Microsoft Intune or System Center Configuration Manager (SCCM) and requires the Windows 11 25H2 operating system to be installed.

Targeting Devices Where Both Applications Are Installed

This policy setting targets devices where both the Microsoft 365 Copilot and Microsoft Copilot applications are installed, and the user did not personally install the Copilot application within the past 28 days.

According to Microsoft, this policy enables administrators to uninstall the Copilot application without disrupting operations.If enabled, the Copilot app will be removed from devices, although users can reinstall it if desired.This capability is exclusive to Enterprise, Professional, and Education client SKUs.

Pausing Automatic Installation and Canceling Integration Plans

In related news, Microsoft has decided to pause the automatic installation of the Microsoft 365 Copilot app on Windows devices with the Microsoft 365 desktop client applications.

Additionally, the company has canceled plans to integrate the Copilot assistant into Windows 11 system notifications, the Settings app, and the File Explorer, features initially announced nearly two years ago.

Addressing a Bug Affecting Email Summaries

Furthermore, Microsoft recently addressed a bug affecting the Microsoft 365 Copilot that caused the AI assistant to improperly summarize confidential emails.

This issue affected about 0.01 percent of email summaries generated by the AI-powered tool.

The introduction of the RemoveMicrosoftCopilotApp policy provides organizations with increased flexibility in managing their software deployments and maintaining control over the tools used within their networks.
