Madhya Pradesh State Cyber Police have detained a District Panchayat member linked to a ₹21.05 crore cryptocurrency investment fraud targeting a Gwalior-based chartered accountant.

Arrest and Investigation

The arrest followed an extended forensic investigation into the systematic financial exploitation of a 70-year-old victim over 218 days. The suspect, a former Indian Army personnel turned local political figure, was apprehended after financial records traced ₹50 lakh of illicit funds to his personal bank account. A Gwalior court ordered his remand to police custody for further interrogation, aiming to uncover an interstate network of account facilitators and digital operatives.

Case Origin

The case originated when the victim, Ashok Vijayvargiya, reported falling for a deceptive investment scheme. Initial contact occurred in December 2025 via a female operative who established rapport through digital messaging before promoting fictitious cryptocurrency trading opportunities with exaggerated returns.

Victim’s Experience

The victim executed 106 transactions across 76 bank accounts over seven months, transferring ₹21,05,92,000 before seeking withdrawal. Fraudsters refused to release funds, demanding additional fees and taxes, prompting the victim to file a complaint.

Fund-Dispersal Strategy

Forensic analysis revealed a multi-tiered fund-dispersal strategy designed to bypass automated fraud detection systems. Stolen capital was routed through approximately 15 transactional stages, ultimately distributed across more than 20,000 bank accounts nationwide. The syndicate’s operational scope indicated a well-organized interstate network, with 35% of the stolen funds funneled into accounts in southern states like Karnataka and Tamil Nadu.

Suspect’s Banking Records

Cyber police teams have been deployed to these regions to conduct raids and identify additional account operators. The primary suspect’s banking records showed suspicious transactions exceeding ₹2.5 crore, suggesting repeated use of his account as a high-volume mule asset. Investigators believe he received commissions for facilitating illicit fund transfers.

International Travel and Scrutiny

Intelligence agencies also noted the suspect’s recent travel to Bangkok, Thailand, prompting scrutiny of his international travel logs, passport records, and communication histories to determine potential ties to overseas cybercrime hubs.

Expert Opinion

Cybersecurity expert Prof. Triveni Singh highlighted the reliance of modern fraud networks on multi-layered banking structures to fragment stolen funds rapidly. By dispersing illicit capital across thousands of micro-accounts, syndicates create significant operational challenges for law enforcement seeking real-time fund freezes.

Authorities’ Actions

State Cyber Police emphasized that evidence recovered from the suspect’s digital devices and banking records represents a critical step in dismantling the broader network. Authorities are collaborating with financial institutions and intelligence units to trace remaining stolen funds and initiate freezing orders on linked accounts.

Public Warnings and Legal Actions

Public warnings have been issued against unverified cryptocurrency investment platforms. Legal actions under the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita, Information Technology Act, and financial fraud statutes will be pursued against all participants in the syndicate, including account suppliers, recruiters, and key operators.
